The 2011/12 figures on mortgage possession claims, the first step in the process of repossession, show that Barking and Dagenham in London has the worst rate of claims.
The figures, compiled by the homelessness charity Shelter, show that in this local authority 8.44 claims are made per 1,000 homes, compared to the national average of 3.5 claims per 1,000 homes.
The top ten list includes many areas in the North West of England, and various other hotspots around the country where the rate is significantly higher than the average.
The six worst areas with distinct clusters in the North East, the West Midlands, central England, East London and a 130 mile band stretching from Liverpool on the west coast, through Manchester to Hull on the east coast.
Many of these areas have relatively high unemployment compared to the national average, and show faster rises in unemployment.
